ISLAMABAD- Politicians belonging to different parties have welcomed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s offer, of constituting a judicial commission, to investigate the alleged rigging in 2013 general elections.
Opposition leader Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah said all the political parties believe in the independence of the judiciary. He hoped that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan would also consider the proposal in order to steer the nation out of the prevailing confusion.
Dr. Farid Ahmed Paracha representing JI said that this initiative by the Prime Minister was a positive step in the right direction.
Senator Mir Hasil Khan Bizenjo urged PTI chief Imran Khan to trust the higher judiciary and cancel his march. The PML-N government needs to complete its tenure to ensure political and economic stability in the country, he added.
Awami National Party leader Mian Iftikhar Hussain said the Prime Minister has given a positive message to the agitating parties.
Ahead of Imran Khan and Tahirul Qadri’s long marches, different options are being discussed in the Capital and some Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leaders say that powerful lobbies want the Minus-1 formula to be implemented. Altaf Hussain of MQM has already hinted about the Minus-1 formula but who has tossed this term amid the crisis is yet to be known. Every time there is a crisis in the country, the only term which is tossed is the Minus-1 formula as in the past the same term was tossed for Justice (retd) Iftikhar Chaudhry and ex-president Asif Ali Zardari.
Although, the timely action and decision of contacting the political parties having representation in parliament by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif have isolated Imran Khan for the time being yet political pundits predict that the political turmoil will continue even after August 14 as some powerful lobbies want a government minus Nawaz Sharif.
A well-placed source in the ruling party informed this scribe that some powerful lobbies, nationally and internationally, wanted a government minus Nawaz Sharif and even if August 14 passed peacefully, the same lobbies would continue creating problems for the PML-N-led
government. The main reason apparently is Nawaz Sharif’s stand on the Musharraf issue, the sources added.
The sources further said that the next challenge for the government is rehabilitation of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) as the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has directed to vacate the schools after August 14. This is going to be another problem for the federal government as it is the responsibility of the government and if the IDPs have no place, then there are chances of chaos, the sources maintained.
Political pundits having an eye on the current scenario have given credit to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for playing his cards wisely and have suggested to the government to face Imran Khan’s challenge politically instead of using force.
Nawaz Sharif succeeded to unite all the political parties having representation in parliament on a one-point agenda of continuation of democracy at any cost has isolated Imran Khan in parliament as the Chaudhry brothers and Sheikh Rashid are the only figures who are endorsing Imran Khan. On the other hand, all the major political parties, including Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam-Fazal (JUI-F), Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) and Qaumi Watan Party have assured the prime minister of upholding the sanctity of Constitution.
The political pundits have suggested that if the government continues playing its cards wisely and did not act as it did on Dr Tahirul Qadri’s issue, then Imran Khan’s long march would automatically be defused as the PTI leadership has no proper objective. But the situation could reverse in Imran Khan’s favour if the government made a single foul in the whole game, the pundits believe.
