      English Poems For Kids

      Into the Woodland
I wonder further in the wood
then pause to take in all I could,
      and there beneath its canopy
I'm caught up in all its beauty.
The colours start in palest green
      a vibrant living leafy screen,
and spreading out in waves of pink
the Willow Herb and nettles link.
      Insects buzz in whispered words,
the broad old Oak is full of birds
where Great Tits dare an early call,
beneath Jays dig within the sprawl.
Beyond a line of Foxg towers
rise above a glade of flowers
and light, a shaft between the trees
guides me on with quiet ease.

      The Marsh

      by Cheryl Sandberg

The clouds are placed in such a way
that seems to cast some heightened logic
on the foray of the flats and clay,
picking out the green from beige.

The moist brown ink and tainted gold,
      is straw becoming copper, weaving
      slanting yellows, burnished and bold,
      turning their flower heads skyward.

A wood plank cabin, drifting on this sea,
warden of thistles, sailing grassy waves,
brings forth from within a twisted old tree,
pushing up from the shadows beneath.

Over to the east a strip of melting blue
calls the pillions to a duel, pulling cables
drawing lines, thrice bisecting the view,
resisting the urge to whip free.

The grasses beckon, giddy, for beyond
the factory’s spires are morbidly cold,
their flavour is on the wind and its bonded
the smell of nature and industry.

      The Great Summer Blue
      by Meg Wiseman
I have been waiting for this moment
      and now I'm beneath it,
looking up to it, spell bound.
      Above is the great blue,
      the first great summer blue
      of the year,
      and it pulls me,
      surrounds me,
      fills me with warmth.
      The clouds have disappeared,
      all is clear above and
      beyond the great blue grows.
      The warm rays of summer
      spread out in the blue,
      stretch and welcome us
      and we are beneath it,
      knowing with pleasure that
it's going to be sunny all day.

      Collecting Water

      by Lisa Oyanna

      When the summer comes
      we hide on down
      in the midday heat and
      watch the land shrink
as the s rise to play and blur
the horizon. But we have to drink.
      A woman walks there
      as the land bakes.
      Her skin is black
her Iro and Gele are deep red,
the water jug, held with one hand
upon its rim, atop her head.
      She sways along the path,
      moving to the heat waves.
In her vessel is the water
      for her children,
from the well five miles back.
      She's one of many mothers
      collecting water every morning.

      Autumn Leaving
      by Robert Patinson
The colours of the trees have changed
      the landscape palette rearranged.
Rains have come in slanting bands
and winds arrive to rock the lands.
      The hedgehog moves to hibernate
and birds fly south to migrate.
The orange leaves begin to curl
the winds and rain now mix and whirl.
Grass along the verge turns brown
the leaves from all the trees fall down.
The skies turn grey the air grows cold
Winter's on its way we're told.

      Autumn Time
      by Cheryl Sandberg
There are many colours that now appear,
      once September's here.
The trees transform before our eyes,
      rain marks the skies.
Bold yellows, sharp orange, deep red,
      beneath the sky of lead.
      Birds migrate and insects vanish,
      harsh winds banish.
Days grow short the night time long,
      hear the blackbirds song.
The winds are cooler the night air cold,
      autumns taking hold.

      Snow Storm
      By Robert Patinson

The land was white and freezing cold
the snow had come and taken hold.
A blizzard moved in from the north
and told the flurries to go forth.
A howling sound brings with it chills,
frozen words drift through the hills.
The trees wear coats of fluffy snow,
the land’s so bright it seems to glow.
Snowflakes drifted down from the sky
whipped by the wind in swirls they fly.
A light and freezing screen they form,

the blizzard grows into a storm.

      Will it Snow?
      by Meg Wiseman

Outside the sky is white and grey,
the forecast said its snow today.
I walk up to the window pane
and wonder if it might just rain.
For as I doubt what I was told,
as if a promise I was sold,
I notice wisps of white appear
at last I see the snow is here.
Soon the snow has grown intense,
No longer do I feel suspense.

Instead, for sure, I will soon go
to run and play out in the snow!

      Spring Time Light
      by Robert Patinson

At last the mornings welcome light
has drawn the darkness from the night,
and growing days give time and heat
      for nature's bounty to repeat.
The trees sing out in chorus lines
      words which blossoms redefine,
these garlands in the trees reveal
the land can now revive and heal.
All creatures feel the warming hand
of sun beams scattered on the land

as battered grass begins to grow,
released once more the rivers flow.

      Once Again
      by Cheryl Sandberg
A change has crept upon the land
the warming touch of nature’s hand,
      the bleakness slowly ebbs away
and spring time lengthens out the day.
      While early flower heads emerge
and green and blossom white diverge,
      the hedgerows slowly come alive
and woodlands once again soon thrive.
The skies now team with insect life
      their hazy clouds becoming rife,
and as the days grow warmer still
the thought of summer breeds goodwill.
