Officials in North Carolina are warning people across the South to get off the roads and stay home as Mother Nature added a new misery to the deadly storm that has paralyzed the region - sheets of treacherous ice.
Two and a half inches of snow followed by sleet and freezing rain brought chaos once again to the winter-weary South - killing 13 people and knocking out power to more than a half a million homes Wednesday.

On major roads and highways Wednesday evening, it seemed like a bad bout of déjà vu as hundreds of stranded drivers were forced to abandon their cars and walk to shelter after they were caught in the brunt of the storm.

This time the disaster scenes played out in North Carolina. Residents of Atlanta, which was battered just two weeks ago, took no chances and stayed off the roads - even as officials redoubled their efforts to swiftly respond to Mother Nature's newest torrent.
The frigid horror of Winter Storm Pax isn't done, either. It is headed north with a vengeance. Meteorologists predict it could drop up to 18 inches of snow on the Northeast starting early Thursday - with up to 14 inches predicted in New York City and ten in Washington, DC.

And, with wind gusts up to 40mph, drifting could become a major problem.

The Northeast is already bracing for impact. In Washington, the federal government will be closed on Thursday - along with all schools and many businesses.

Winter Storm Pax will then move Northeast through Wednesday night into Friday, impacting the heavily populated I-95 corridor.
The snow will start on Wednesday night in the Middle Atlantic, affecting Washington, Baltimore and Philadelphia.
